Text from a "buyer" — example of a common scam pattern

Hey, I'm interested in your listing! Before I drive over, I just want to make sure you're a real person. Google will send you a code — can you share it with me to verify?

Follow-up — example of a common scam pattern

I got scammed last time buying from someone on Craigslist. I just need you to read me the 6-digit code that Google sends to your phone. It's just for my safety. Thanks!

Why this is suspicious

  • They're using your phone number to create a Google Voice account linked to YOU
  • The 'verification code' is Google confirming a new Google Voice number — not an identity check
  • Once they have a Google Voice number linked to your phone, they use it to scam other people
  • Your phone number gets flagged for fraud because the scams are traced back to your number
  • No legitimate buyer needs a Google verification code to confirm you're real
  • This is the most common Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace verification scam
  • Google specifically warns not to share verification codes with anyone

What to do

  1. Never share any verification code with anyone — not Google, not your bank, not anything
  2. If someone asks for a code to 'verify' you, end the conversation immediately
  3. If you already shared the code, go to voice.google.com and reclaim your number
  4. Report the person on whatever platform they contacted you through
  5. Change your Google account password if you shared any codes
  6. File a report at reportfraud.ftc.gov

Frequently asked questions

What is the Google Voice verification code scam?+
A scammer asks you to share a verification code that Google sends to your phone. They're actually setting up a Google Voice number linked to your real phone number. They then use that Google Voice number to run scams — and the fraud gets traced back to your number, not theirs.
What can someone do with my Google Voice number?+
They use it to post scam ads, run phishing operations, and commit fraud — all while the number traces back to your identity. They can also use it to intercept verification codes for other services, potentially accessing your accounts.
I already shared the code. What do I do?+
Go to voice.google.com immediately. If a number was created using your phone, you can reclaim it by going to Settings > Phone Numbers > New Linked Number. This will disconnect the scammer's access. Also change your Google password and enable 2-factor authentication.
Why do they say it's to 'verify I'm real'?+
It's a social engineering tactic. By framing the code as a safety/identity check, they make the request seem reasonable — especially in a marketplace context where people worry about meeting strangers. But no legitimate buyer or seller needs a Google verification code.
