What the scam looks like

Examples of common scam message patterns. These are composites based on real reported scams, not quotes from specific individuals.

PayPal email — example of a common scam pattern

You have a pending invoice for $499.99 from Geek Squad Renewal Services. If you did not authorize this transaction, call 1-888-XXX-XXXX immediately to cancel and receive your refund.

Alternate version — example of a common scam pattern

Invoice from Norton LifeLock — Annual subscription renewal: $349.99. Payment due immediately. If this charge is unauthorized, contact our billing department at 1-877-XXX-XXXX to process cancellation.

Why this is suspicious

  • The invoice is sent through PayPal's real system, so it appears in your actual PayPal account
  • You never purchased the product or service listed
  • Includes a phone number to call for 'cancellation' — this is the scam entry point
  • When you call, they ask for remote access to your computer or your banking details
  • Impersonates well-known companies (Geek Squad, Norton, McAfee) to seem legitimate
  • Uses large dollar amounts ($349-$799) to trigger panic
  • PayPal allows anyone with an email address to send an invoice — receiving one doesn't mean you owe anything

What to do

  1. Do not call the phone number in the invoice — it connects to a scam call center
  2. Do not pay the invoice — simply ignore or decline it in PayPal
  3. Log into PayPal directly (paypal.com) and decline the invoice from your dashboard
  4. Report the invoice as spam/fraud within PayPal
  5. Never give remote computer access to someone who contacts you about an invoice
  6. Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov

Frequently asked questions

Can scammers send real PayPal invoices?+
Yes. Anyone with a PayPal account can send an invoice to any email address. The invoice arrives through PayPal's legitimate system, making it look authentic. But receiving an invoice doesn't mean you owe money — it's just a payment request that you can ignore or decline.
What happens if I call the number on the fake invoice?+
You'll reach a scam call center where operators pretend to help you 'cancel' the charge. They typically ask for remote access to your computer (to install malware or steal data) or ask for your bank details to 'process a refund.' They may also trick you into sending money.
Should I pay the PayPal invoice to avoid charges?+
No. An invoice is a request for payment, not an automatic charge. If you didn't buy anything, you owe nothing. Simply log into PayPal.com, find the invoice, and click 'Decline.' You will not be charged.
How do I report a scam invoice on PayPal?+
Log into PayPal.com, go to your Activity, find the invoice, and select 'Report this invoice.' You can also forward suspicious PayPal emails to phishing@paypal.com. PayPal's fraud team investigates reported invoices.
