Text Message Scams

Text Message Scams (Smishing)

Americans received roughly 19 billion scam texts in 2024 — nearly 60 per person, every month — and that number is climbing. Smishing now outpaces email phishing in both volume and click-through rate because phones display less metadata and people respond more quickly to texts. The most successful campaigns impersonate USPS, banks, the IRS, and toll authorities. Here’s how to spot the patterns and what to do when one hits your phone.

Red flags to watch for

01

A "missed delivery" text from USPS, FedEx, UPS, or DHL with a link to "reschedule" — carriers don’t text reschedule links.

02

A toll-road past-due notice ("E-ZPass", "SunPass", "FasTrak") with a payment link. Toll authorities mail notices, not text them.

03

A bank "fraud alert" asking you to call a number or click a link. Real bank alerts tell you to log into the app.

04

A 6-digit verification code you didn’t request — if someone asks you to share it, they’re hijacking your account.

05

A "wrong number" text that turns chatty and eventually pitches crypto or romance. This is the opener for pig butchering.

06

A link that’s shortened (bit.ly, tinyurl) or uses lookalike domains (usps-tracking[.]vip, irs-gov[.]net). Legitimate organizations use their primary domain.

What to do if it’s happening to you

  1. 01

Don’t click the link. Don’t reply. Don’t call any number in the text.

  2. 02

Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) — your carrier uses these reports to block scam campaigns at the network level.

  3. 03

If you’re unsure whether it’s real, contact the organization through their official app or by typing their website into your browser — never via the link in the text.

  4. 04

Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Toll-scam texts also go to the FBI’s IC3 at ic3.gov.

  5. 05

Block the number. iPhone: Messages → sender → "block this caller". Android: long-press the conversation → "block & report spam".

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a text is a scam?+

Paste the text into the Cautellus scanner at cautellus.com — the AI checks for known scam patterns, lookalike domains, and urgency tactics in seconds. As a quick manual check: legitimate organizations never ask you to click a link to "verify" your account, and shortened or unusual domain names are an almost-certain red flag.

Why am I suddenly getting so many scam texts?+

Phone numbers are leaked in data breaches, sold on dark-web data brokers, and harvested from public sources. Scammers run automated campaigns that text millions of numbers at once — there’s nothing personal about it. Forwarding scam texts to 7726 helps your carrier block the source numbers.

Are USPS delivery texts always scams?+

Real USPS only sends texts to numbers that have signed up for Informed Delivery alerts, and never includes a link to "reschedule" or "verify your address". If you didn’t sign up, every USPS text you receive is a scam. The real tracking page is usps.com/tracking — never anything else.

What happens if I clicked a scam text link?+

If you only loaded the page, your risk is low — close the tab and clear your browser history. If you entered any information (password, credit card, SSN), change passwords immediately, monitor your bank, and consider a credit freeze. If you downloaded an app, factory-reset the phone after backing up photos.
